Ananda Purn’ima Celebrations in New York in Sectorial Office

Warm thanks to everyone contributing to the sweetness of the Ananda Purn’ima (Baba’s Birthday) celebrations, May 21, 2016!

Some Margiis came the evening before to be able to join the early morning program. Every day at Sectorial Office starts at 5 a.m. with Painjajanya i.e. singing of Prabhata Samgiita (devotional songs composed by Shrii P. R. Sarkar), kiirtana (singing of the mantra Baba Nam Kevalam and dancing laliita marmika dance) and meditation. Ananda Purn’ima programs were no exception but after Painjajanya, kiirtana was continued until 6:07 a.m., the time that Shrii P. R. Sarkar was born on full moon day of May 21, 1921 in Jamalpur, India. Everyone present then joined collective meditation.

unnamed (10)Akhanda Kiirtana (three hours singing of Baba Nam Kevalam) took place from 7 – 10 a.m. followed by collective meditation and reading of Ananda Vanii (special message selected from the writings of Shrii Shrii Anandamurti).

unnamed (5)Ananda Marga in New York is truly a multicultural and international community and it was amazing that among those present (34 adults and three children) the Ananda Vanii was read in around 30 languages. After sharing of inspiring words and Baba stories by Acarya Shankarananda Avadhuta as well as others present, a festive vegetarian lunch was served along with a variety of home made cakes and sweets.

unnamed (9)The programs were very successful and everyone enjoyed the subtle blissful vibrations of the day. Even the nature was rejoicing with the first warm day of spring and first roses blooming in our garden.

Testimonial for Kitchen Staff

Hi Michael,

Thank you so much for creating such a wonderful environment for our retreat this weekend. As someone who values healthy eating, it was so important to me to have healthy food during my stay. Knowing that I could arrive each day to an abundance of delicious, nutritious food made the weekend an absolute delight. I left each meal feeling nourished and full. Everyone was incredibly friendly and accommodating. I simply cannot wait to return!! (I’ll be dreaming of chocolate lava cake until then!)

With a grateful heart,

Shelly Ohlms

Every Sunday…Rain or shine….we are on the line. And we got this. Nothing but soul sister and service. Love our all girl gang! @mamadfeedsthehomeless @julessorensen @leesherman5‪#‎mamadfeedsthehomeless‬

March 13 2016 – Otis was in our line this morning. He hails from Indiana but life happened and he found himself in a bad way in long beach. He wishes he could work as a carpenter but his type one diabetes keeps him in and out of the hospital. He’s fresh out today. And didn’t have any clean clothes. Thank you for your donated clothes that helped Otis today.

March 6 2016 – Mauricio has been homeless two years because of variations in mental illness. He’s patient, fair and kind but will stand up for himself. He feels blessed to have housing and access to meds. He loves Tinkerbell. “I don’t know…she’s sweet. She’s cute. She’s like really alive.” I will be out of town mid week. But will pick up donations Saturday AM! Get in touch. And thank you so very much to all my friends for all your donations!

March 6 2016 – John is from West Covina. He loves fashion, had me get him some tight jeans, loves to pose for the camera (I have eight other dance poses) and is a fabulous singer. “I love ‪#‎adamlevine‬ and I forgot the other guys name (‪#‎justintimberlake‬ ;)) I just love music” he’s hilarious, full of love and life and will get his SRO for housing in 6 weeks “I can’t wait! I’ve been out here for a year and a half on the street. I used to have a two story with my baby’s mama but we didn’t get along. I just can’t wait to take a bath, cook my own food, sleep in a bed with like sheets! Real sheets!” He thinks he’ll look for work in a warehouse or a restaurant with a permanent address. It’s funny how much we cherish the taste of a home cooked meal and the feel of fresh sheets after we’ve lost everything. Little things we take for granted…and you guessed it. I’m on a mission to bring him brand new sheets next week! Feel free to donate bedding any time. My little Toyota loves being stuffed each week! Get in touch.

“God blesses us every time you come down here Miss Kristen and @nicowander ” my watchdogs today! Patricia and Linda may be chair bound but they have their priceless friendship whilst waiting for housing to lift each other’s spirits. They like to heckle all those not being fair in line for us. I stayed after and gave them both new coats from my secret stash. They were pretty stoked by the looks on Pat’s face. 😎Bring it people! My schedule should be open Friday to make city rounds. Would love to see your faces! Love and thank our weekly selfless crew too! @julessorensen @nicowander @squideats missing you @leesherman5 ! And anyone else unable to come today.

Beverly was in our line this morning. She’s been homeless for ten years. Her fiancé was killed while they lived in Tuscaloosa, Alabama and she brought her son out here given the discrimination he faced as a gay man in the South. He died from AIDS three years after. She lives in a hotel on‪#‎skidrow‬ as many do which doesn’t mean anything more than a small often unsanitary room packed with 100s of other residents. She wants to “get it together….do something…..” Soon she thinks. She loves Los Angeles especially the ‪#‎ladodgers‬ underneath this new donated coat she’s top to bottom dodger blue. Thank you again to all of my friends who keep donations rolling in each week! Let’s keep up the momentum. And thank you to my girl gang @julessorensen @squideats @nicowander your love and service means the world. @mamadfeedsthehomeless

Laemon wanted me to make him look strong. I said turn to the side and let’s see then. He insisted on wearing his glasses. His eyes are nice and kind though. He and his friend reminded me of ‪#‎danieletamagni‬ ‘s‪#‎sapeurs‬ as I looked up and saw him clutching one of our donated Valentine’s made by a local school. He’s the only one today who liked the card more than the candy. His wife Lynette died four years ago from kidney failure “her diabetes was too far along…by the time we learned to eat right it was too late.” He’s staying at the Union Mission now. Been homeless four years. He was born in Ontario, CA. He hopes to get a job as a truck driver when he gets a license. So he can sleep in the truck and make it his home. “I like this Valentine it’s nice. ” I asked him if he’s not on drugs than how does he handle living on ‪#‎skidrow‬ ? “When you’re on the right frequency all the bullshit doesn’t matter.” His style and manner match that frequency too. Thank you so much for all of your donations especially the candy cards and fun Valentine’s hearts! Please keep clothing donations coming in!

This is Smoky. The first recipient ever of a Tiny House. She’s from Mississippi. When her husband died she became homeless. That was in 2004. “He took care of me. What else did we know…were taught a husband cares for his wife.” She lives on Figueroa and Jefferson. It makes her feel like she has a home. But she also likes to be able to tent up with her friends on the 42nd Street overpass. Why not right? Id rather be with my friends too. She has to coordinate using the restroom and public washrooms. But she’s mindful of keeping clean. They all take care of one another on this overpass above the 110 but today some tiny homes were removed as well as some tents. Only on this street. The clean ups are a citywide practice. They use sanitation as defense. I see both sides even as an advocate for the homeless but err on the side of hoping today’s City Council meeting will work together with all of us working for the decriminalization of homelessness. Contrary to the belief of some, homelessness isn’t always a choice. Nor is welfare. Mental illness isn’t a choice nor is alcoholism, addiction, PTSD, getting drafted or your husband dying. Smoky is all humanity. She even walked me to my car and gave me a long hug. ‪#‎mamadfeedsthehomeless‬ ‪#‎tinyhouse‬

Solid Sunday crew! (As always) thank you all so much for your unwavering service.

Creamy White Bean Chili – by Bhaeravii Devi

Creamy White Bean Chili (8-10 servings)

There are never enough of vegetarian and vegan chilis. I was asked to do a plain white bean chili and here it is, with lots of cheese.

    • 2 poblanos, seeds removed and diced
    • 3 tablespoons of grapeseed (or another high-heat oil)
    • 1/3 cup of cilantro, chopped
    • 2 14oz cans of organic cannellini beans (white kidney beans)
    • 1 tablespoon of oregano
    • ½ teaspoon of cayenne
    • ½ teaspoon of ground cumin
    • 2 cups of vegetable broth
    • 1 cup of unsweetened rice milk
    • 2 cups of sour cream or plain greek yogurt

Optional toppings for serving: diced avocado, sour cream, plain greek yogurt, crumbled goat cheese, shredded gruyere cheese. serve with flatbread or cornbread or muffins.

    • In a large, heavy pot, heat the oil over medium heat and add the poblanos. Cook for about 5 minutes.
    • Add the cannellini beans, cilantro, oregano, cayenne, + cumin. Stir and cook for about 1 minute.
    • Then add the vegetable broth + unsweetened rice milk. Give it a good stir, bring it to a boil, then reduce to a simmer. Cook uncovered for about 30 minutes. The chili should start to reduce and thicken.
    • Add the sour cream or yogurt and give it a good stir to combine and then remove the chili from the heat. Give it a taste and adjust any seasoning accordingly. Serve warm with your favorite toppings.

    Ananda Marga Canada

Ananda Marga Canada held seminar and Bhukti Pradhan Elections in Brampton, ON on Sunday March 27, 2016. On Saturday March 26, Mehool Dave, Sujata and family invited all Margiis, Acaryas, friends and other devotees to a grand debut Indian dance performance of Kiirtana Dave held at Lester B. Pearson Theatre in Brampton, ON and attended by around 390 people.
Bharathanatyam Arangetram of Kiirtana Dave. Bharathanatyam is an ancient Indian dance form originated in India centuries ago. This dance form combines complicated rhythmic steps and other foot movements, hand gestures (mudras), facial gestures and dance movements that result in a high sophistication and aesthetics. The dancer has to correlate the movements of the dance to the melody and rhythm of the musicians. For Kiirtana’s performance, highly trained internationally claimed musicians performed live at the stage during the entire performance that lasted from 5:30 p.m. until 11 p.m on Saturday March 26, 2016.
Arangetram means to “ascend the stage” and is among the most important events in a dancers life when the teacher (Guru) is ready to allow the student to have his first solo performance. Kiirtana is now 16 years old and has been practicing Indian classical dance since age 4. Her teacher for the last ten years is Guru Natyalalamani, Smt. Jayanthi Shanmugalingam, a renowned dance teacher and founder of a dance school in Toronto. For the last few months Kiirtana has been taking classes daily and during the performance she was dancing for over three hours – something that requires extreme endurance. The performance was of very high calibre, both the musicians, costumes, lightning, sound control, and most importantly Kiirtana’s dance was full of vitality, and deep expressions through hand gestures (mudra), dance movements, and facial expressions. She showed that she is not only a great dancer but also a great actor and was able to convey the storyline of the dances with elegance, humility and humor.
Ananda Marga Seminar in Toronto. Mehool Dave ji had made his home available for guests coming from different parts of Canada and USA for the entire Easter weekend of March 25 to March 28. Ten Whole Time Acaryas (8 Dadas and 2 Didis) came for the programs of Kiirtana’s dance performance and the Ananda Marga Seminar and the long weekend was full of activities and felt like a full 3 days retreat.
The seminar was held on Sunday March 28. In the morning from9:30 to 12:00 and attended by 30 Margiis and 10 WTs. There were three seminar classes. The seminar trainer, Acarya Diiptimanananda Avadhuta, introduced the topics and lead discussion. The topics for seminar were taken from the published books of Shrii Shrii Anandamurti ji (Shrii P. R. Sarkar) and included The Existential Value of Ideology; The Five Kinds of Conscience; and The only Way to Salvation. Seminar organizer was Acarya Parinirvanananda Avadhuta.
After the lively discussions of the seminar topics there was collective meditation and lunch followed by Bhukti Pradhana Election. The Margiis unanimously selected Vivek Wu to work as Bhukti Pradhana for Greater Toronto Bhukti. Vivek has been working as acting BP for the last one and half year and everyone is happy with his work and requested him to continue. Vivek Wu has already selected members for the Bhukti Committee. The seminar and BP election was an important event in bringing everyone together and accelerating the speed of Ananda Marga Mission in Canada.
After the BP election, everyone stayed for Dharma Cakra and Katha Kiirtana followed by dinner.

    Acarya Cirananda Avadhuta visiting Morelia

The visit of Acarya Cirananda Avadhuta to Morelia in Mexico is particularly auspicious for this important town in the state of Michoacan. The unit of Morelia have responded by organizing several events and lectures for Dada who spoke about Yoga, Meditation and also the practical aspects of living on this planet earth.

Most acaryas of Ananda Marga have found Morelia one of the best places for propagating the ideology of self-realization and service to humanity which represents the essence of Ananda Marga.

Dadaji received media attention recently in Monterrey. On 15th of February Dadaji had an interview in TV Nuevo Leon    where he explained about  the benefit of  practicing meditation. Below is the picture during the interview.
